The U.S. Championship
The U. S. Championship Tournament opened Tuesday night at the Manhattan Chess CLub in New York. It is being financed by the American Chess Foundation with Hans Kmoch as tournament director. Arthur B. Bisguier is defending his title and the winner will receive the Lessing J. Rosenwald trophy.
Fourteen players are competing, with Reshevsky heading the list. Paired with Robert Byrne in the first round, he received a one-day postponement to give him time to get back from Dallas. Evans, who was originally scheduled to meet William Lombardy in the opening round, is unable to compete, having been called back to Los Angeles on business.
Bobby Fischer, 14-year-old open champion, played his first round match ahead of the rest of the field and won it from Arthur Feuerstein. Play will be held from 6:30 to 11:30 p.m. on weekdays and 2 to 7 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. The Dec. 28-29-30 matches will be played at the Marshall Chess Club, the rest at the Manhattan.
