North Central Open
Stephan Popel of Detroit, resident of this country for only slightly more than a year, emerged as the winner of the 1957 North Central Open in Milwaukee last weekend. He topped a strong field, including National Open Champion Bobby Fischer (6th) and Donald Byrne (3rd) who was the 1953 U. S. Open champion. Junior Charles Kalme of Philadelphia finished second, also with a score of 5 wins and 2 draws, but losing to Popel on tie-breaking points. They drew in their individual encounter in the final round, and both also drew with Byrne.
