Chess Lead Taken By Donald Byrne
Defeats Burger at Cleveland as Berliner Drops Out of Tie on Loss to Addison

Cleveland, Aug. 12—Donald Byrne of Ann Arbor, Mich., today broke a tie for first place with Hans Berliner of Washington in the national open tournament of the United States Chess Federation. Byrne won in the seventh round from Karl Burger of New York as Berliner bowed to William G. Addison of San Francisco. As a result Byrne took the lead with a score of 6½-½.
Addison, at 6-1, tied for second place with Bobby Fischer and Edmar Mednis, both of New York.
Berliner, at 5½-1½, is in a group with six others, including Robert Byrne of Indianapolis, J. Theodorovitsch of Toronto and Jack W. Collins, Jeremiah F. Donovan, Allen Kaufman and Anthony E. Santasiere, all of New York.
The United States champion, Arthur B. Bisguier, defeated Henry Gross of San Francisco to tie at 5-2 with Burger and Paul Brandts of New York, Atillio Di Camillo of Philadelphia and Geza Fuster of Toronto.
Mednis turned back Geza Fuster of Toronto and Fischer won with the black pieces against Igor Garias of Eastlake, Ohio. Jack W. Collins of New York played to a draw with Robert Byrne of Indianapolis.
