Wanatek Victor In Jersey Chess
Philadelphian Awarded First Place by Solokoff System After Five Tie at 5-1
West Orange, N. J., Feb. 24— Sol Wanatek of Philadelphia, emerging undefeated from six rounds of the independent open tournament at the Log Cabin Chess Club, was awarded first prize tonight.
Wanatek won four games and drew two. He drew with his sixth-round opponent, Matthew Green of Sussex, N. J.
Four players finished on even terms with Wanatek. The Solokoff system of tie-breaking was used and placed Geza Fuster of Toronto second and Green third. Arthur Feuerstein and Anthony E. Santasiere were adjudged tied for fourth.
Eight tied at 4—2. They were Bobby Fischer, 13-year-old player from Brooklyn; Eliot Hearst, Claude Hillinger and William Lombardy of New York; G. E. O'Rourke, Jr. and Norman T. Whitaker of Washington, Homer Jones of Baltimore and A. Di Camillo of Philadelphia.
In the final round, Santasiere defeated Hearst; Feuerstein defeated Herbert Avram of Arlington, Va.; O'Rourke drew with E. Godbold, of Arlington, Va.; Fuster beat Whitaker.
Also, Lombardy beat M. Tilles of Baltimore; Di Camillo defeated R. Weinstein of New York; Jones beat R. Friedenthal of Westport, Conn.; Hillinger beat C. Pennington of Westfield, N.J. and Fischer beat J. Goldsmith of New York.
The tournament committee comprised Edgar T. McCormick and E. Forry Laucks, club president.
