Fischer Wins Title In Junior Tourney
Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, N.Y., a veteran at 14, retained his title of junior chess champion of the United States, winning 8½-½ in the tournament concluded last week in San Francisco.
Fischer was matched with most of the leaders in the 33-boy Swiss system event, defeating eight of his opponents and drawing with California Junior Champion Gilbert Ramirez of San Francisco in the fifth round.
Ramirez took second prize with a 7½-1½ score. He also was undefeated but drew three times, with Richard Owen of Salt Lake City and Ronald Thacker of Richmond, Calif., as well as Fischer.
The Los Angeles entrant, Stephen Sholomson, finished in third place, scoring 6½-2½. He lost to the two leaders and drew with Leonard Hill of Mountain View, Cal. Mike Bredoff of Redwood City was fourth with 6-3.
