Michigan Player Keeps Chess Lead
Donald Byrne Victor Over Addison in 8th Round of U.S. Open Tourney
Cleveland, Aug. 13—Donald Byrne of Ann Arbor, Mich., kept the lead in the open championship of the United States Chess Federation today. Byrne's over-all score was 7½-½ after he had defeated William G. Addison of San Francisco in the eighth round.
Fourteen-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn had a tally of 7-1. Fischer beat Edmar Mednis of New York University. This placed the Brooklyn lad in the runner-up position and he was automatically paired with the leader for the ninth round.
Robert Byrne of Indianapolis, older brother of the leader, was third with a score of 6½-1½ after turning back J. Theodorovitch of Toronto.
The United States champion, Arthur B. Bisguier of New York, defeated Lieut. John Hudson of Dover, Del., to attain a score of 6-2. Others with the same score were Addison, Mednis, Karl Burger, Jack W. Collins, Anthony E. Santasiere, Hans Berliner and Atillio Di Camillo.
Well placed with 5½-2½ were Jeremiah F. Donovan, Allen Kaufman, Anthony F. Saidy, Walter J. Shipman and Theodorovitch.
