The World of Chess: Boy, 14, Real Champ
Robert Fischer, 14, has shouldered himself into the front rank of American chess experts.
He cannot be discounted because of is youth because he is now a seasoned tournament player with a record of successes never before achieved by so young a chesser.
He won the U.S. Junior championship last year and repeated the victory last month. He also won the ten second tourney. He moved with a speed and accuracy that amazed the old timers.
That he is no brief candle has been recognized by the officials of the annual Hastings (England) Christmas Tournament Congress, who have extended him an invitation to compete against the world's strongest players.
The Chess Section of the USSR has asked him to play in Russia after the completion of the U.S. Open Tourney in session at Cleveland, Nikita Khrushchev is expediting visas for the trip.
Robert is not pressing his powers elsewhere. His scholastic record is only average as a freshman in high school.
Samuel Reshevsky's next match is slated for Tuesday against Donald Byrne. It will be sponsored by the American Chess Foundation. Mr. Reshevsky defeated Arthur Bisguier in his first series.
