New York Boy Leads In U.S. Chess Tourney
Cleveland, Aug. 14 (UP) — Bobby Fischer, 14, of New York, pulled ahead of the field Tuesday night in the 58th annual National Open Chess Tournament, besting the previously undefeated Donald Byrne.
Fischer today led the field of 176 contestants with eight points on the strength of his performance. In earlier rounds, the prodigy had drawn twice and won six games. Fischer, now junior champion of the nation, had four games to go and was rated a good possibility to become the third junior player to win the open title.
Victory would make Fischer the youngest open champion.
Byrne ranks second with 7½ points. Orest Popovitch, of Lakewood, N.J., had 7 points.
