Fischer Takes Open Event At Cleveland
Bobby Fischer, 14-year-old student at Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, won the Open Championship of the U.S. Chess Federation in the tournament concluded last week at Cleveland, according to a report from the New York Times.
Fischer, who had been tied with Donald Byrne of Ann Arbor, Mich., before starting the final round, was held to a draw by Walter J. Shipman of New York. That left him with a 10-2 score, with the final result still in doubt.
In the critical game U.S. Champion Arthur Bisguier was matched with Donald Byrne. A win for Byrne would mean the championship. But Bisguier was in his best form and the point was his, giving him the same 10-2 tally already reached by Fischer.
The tie-breaking system now had to be computed by George Koltanowski of San Francisco, who directed the tournament. The first report had Bisguier on top, but further involved arithmetic moved Fischer into the winning position. The reaction of the large audience clearly indicated that this was the popular result.
Donald Byrne wound up in third place with 9½-2½. Fourth place was a quadruple tie at 9-3 among Shipman, Robert Byrne of Indianapolis and Edmar Mednis and Anthony E. Santasiere of New York.
Tied at 8½-3½ were Paul Brandts and Anthony F. Saidy of New York and J. Theodorovitch of Toronto. Scores of 8-4 were compiled by William G. Addison of San Francisco, Atillio Di Camillo of Philadelphia, Hans Berliner of Washington, D. C., Orest Popovych of Lakewood, N. J., Morton Siegel of New York and Gerald Fielding of Regina, Can.
