Fischer Clinches Series Sixth Game
Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn, the 14-year-old national open chess champion, yesterday clinched his series with Rodolfo Cardoso of Manila, the junior champion of the Philippines, when he drew the sixth game at the Manhattan Chess Club in forty-six moves.
The result gave him a lead of 4½-1½. The contest is limited to eight games. The seventh is scheduled for 2 o'clock this afternoon.
Cardoso, with the black pieces, again resorted to the Sicilian defense. Fischer, however, introduced a novelty on the tenth move when he sacrificed a bishop for two pawns. His combination yielded a third pawn two moves later. Defending with the greatest care, Cardoso was able to hold the youngster at bay until an ending was reached in which Fischer's three paws were unable to prevail against his adversary's bishop. He offered a draw after forty-six moves had been recorded, to which Cardoso consented.
