Chess Fall-out
ALTHOUGH there is an entry of 150 drawn from 16 different countries, the director of the Hastings Christmas Chess Congress, Mr. Frank Rhoden told me yesterday that he was very dissatisfied with what has been happening.
The Congress opens on Monday. Two of the most promising players, Fischer and Rossolimo have fallen out at the last moment. There will be only one Russian instead of the two hoped for—Keres who was originally Estonian.
Rossolimo, a Corsican and a past champion of France and America, is in Holland where he has been playing in a tournament. He is suffering from stomach ulcers.
There is general disappointment that Fischer, an American will not be there. Although only 14, he is the American champion. No American has won the Hastings Congress since Reshevsky in 1937.
