Lombardy wins
William Lombardy had made chess history by becoming the first United States player to win an international event ahead of a Soviet competitor. He scored an overwhelming victory in the world under-21 championship in Toronto, winning the title with two rounds to spare and finishing far ahead of the Russian Vladimir Selimanov.
The 14-year-old American prodigy Bobby Fischer, who will play in the next Hastings Congress is leading the United States open championship.
